Totem created by il juuwaas "big man sitting". Also known as Fred Lauth Sr.
Baker Park // Crown Hill Neighborhood // Seattle, Washington
Fred Lauth is an artist from Hydaburg, Alaska. He is a great grandson of Chief Thomas Skultka. Fred has been carving and painting for over twenty years. He is a member of the Frog clan. Cedar is the wood of choice in traditional carving. However, for this artwork, a dying monkey puzzle tree in the park became available for a totem pole. Fred designed and carved the pole right where the tree had grown, with its roots still in the ground.
According to the artist, the Raven is represented as the trickster. It was Raven who let out the light and found people in a clam shell. The bear is bringing the frog back to the park to restore them to the area. At the center of the pole is the cycle of life represented by the cycle of spawning salmon.
